Sacred Arts Tour 2012: The Art Of Compassion
5:30 pm
The Tibetan Cultural Pageant is presented by the monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery now located in South India. This year the Tibetan Cultural Pageant will include the Yak Dance, the Snow Lion Dance, the Good Luck Dance, and Chanting prayers as well as a demonstration of debate. Drepung Gomang Tour members are refugee monks now living at the monastery. The Drepung Gomang Monastery was founded in 1416 near Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Gomang college is the oldest of the four colleges of Drepung. In 1859, before the invasion of Communist China, Drepung Monastery has more than 10,000 monks. Gomang College has produced many eminent Buddhist masters and has been a very important Tibetan Buddhist learning center. Each of the colleges of Drepung has a specialty and the focus of Gomang is philosophy; logic and debate. From 5:30 to 6:30 the monks will be selling crafts, prayer flags and banners in our Gallery, created by members of the refugee Tibetan community living in India. Concert starts at 7 p.m. All proceeds from merchandise and ticket sales go directly to the Drepung Gomang Monastery.
