In this class, you continue to refine your drawing and design skills as you use a variety of materials to draw still-lifes, figures and botanical subjects. Further develop your observational skills as you study light and shadow, correct proportion, and learn how perspective and foreshortening affect the rendering of subjects.

This drawing class is not for the faint of heart! Reportage is a high-energy, high-speed attempt to capture the essence of an event—or moment—in a sketchbook. It is an incredibly dynamic way to record your experiences out in the world without using a camera. We will start in class, drawing from the model and then cover skills and techniques needed to have a rewarding, expressive, journaling experience. In later classes, we will venture out into the real world where you will get to experience the thrills and challenges of reportage and likely produce some very raw and expressive gems! It is recommended that you have some drawing skill and experience before taking this class.

Drawing is fundamental to artistic expression. It reveals the mind and intention of the artist through making marks and thus communicates idea, vision, energy and spirit. This course is designed to help students and artists develop a personal style by producing meaningful drawings. We explore drawing techniques and the problems of working from life and imagination, in black and white and color. There will be two classes with a live model. Classes include demonstrations, studio work time and critiques. Homework is encouraged but not required. Individualized instruction permits the beginner as well as the experienced artist to be challenged and yet comfortable working at his/her own level.

1049.: WRITING AND DRAWING CARTOONING FOR ADULTS

A course for both writers and artists--learn to write and illustrate your own stories, or write and draw your own editorial cartoons, comic strips and comic books. We will explore the history and development of cartooning and learn the chemistry of humor and drama told in both words and pictures; learn how to visually design your characters so they fit their parts; caricature your favorite (or least favorite) public figures and visually editorialize your views of them; and study the direction and timing that goes into creating sequential art--from greeting cards and multi-paneled comic strips to comic books and graphic novels.
*Please bring your lap-tops or writing pads to write in class. The instructor will provide the pencils, pens and brushes.

This course covers the basics of illustrating children’s books and graphic novels, including character development, sequential illustration, pacing, and rhythm. Students can bring in their own writing to work from (rough draft is OK) or someone else’s (with permission). We’ll go through the steps necessary to create a “dummy”, which can be sent off to publishers when finished. Drawing experience is helpful, but not required.
