2056: BEGINNING METALSMITHING: THE FIRST STEP--BASIC TECHNIQUES

This class is the first step into the creative world of metalsmithing. In this class, students will learn basic techniques and tool care, and the projects will start with metal preparation, design layout and how to saw out their design. Students will then learn filing and sanding techniques and finally how to apply a texture and final finish and/or patina. A copper or brass pierced pendant or key chain will be made in Section A. A pair of copper or brass pierced earrings will be made in Section B.
*Students will be expected to follow along with the class projects.
*Students will pay a studio fee of $8 plus an additional fee for the materials kit (between $8 to $20), based upon current market prices of metals to the instructor at the first class.
*This class is prerequisite to all other metalsmithing classes. After completion of this class, students may choose any of the other Beginning Metalsmithing classes in any order.

2057: BEGINNING METALSMITHING: COLD CONNECTIONS--WIRE AND TUBE RIVETS

Cold Connections is a great next step for beginning jewelry makers. Without having to solder or use a torch, you can create high quality pieces that you will be proud to wear. Once you learn some simple ways to join metal, you'll be able to fashion a wide array of jewelry, using tools that are inexpensive and readily available. The riveting techniques that you will learn allow you to join different metals and incorporate "found" and non-metal accents into your pieces that would not be able to be soldered. A pin/pendant in copper and/or brass with a colorful tin accent will be made in Section A. A tension set bead in copper and/or brass will be made in Section B.
*Students will be expected to follow along with the class projects.

2058: BEGINNING METALSMITHING: SOLDERING--SWEAT SOLDERS AND BUTT SOLDERS

Soldering, a technique used for thousands of years, uses heat and solder to join pieces of metal together. (It is the most commonly used technique for joining metal.) In this class, students will learn torch use and safety and some basic soldering skills such as sweat solder joins, butt solder joins and the use of sheet and wire solder. A metal bead of copper and/or brass will be made in Section A. A brooch/pendant in copper and/or brass will be made in Section B.
*Students will be expected to follow along with the class project.

2060: TEXTURES IN METAL CLAY

This class is designed for both the beginning and advanced metal clay student who would like to broaden their repertoire of surface techniques for metal clay. Together we will explore water etching, carving, slip trailing, enameling, stenciling and other ways to add design and dimension to students’ artistic creations. Students will be encouraged to work through their own designs, with assistance from the instructor. We will work primarily with copper metal clay, the newest addition to the metal clay family, to create our prototype designs and execute final designs using fine silver clay.

This is an intermediate level class that focuses on creating three-dimensional objects in bronze and fine silver metal clay. We will create spheres, disks, cubes and compound forms and learn the techniques necessary to ensure quality construction and precision. Once we have mastered the basic forms, we’re going to shake everything up and alter those forms to create unique and beautiful jewelry objects. This class is sure to improve your skills with metal clay and, at the same time, open you up to new creative possibilities.

Let’s take your charms, trinkets and beads and turn them into a lovely treasure-style bracelet. As we work on the bracelet, we’ll learn a number of wire wrapping techniques that will enhance your custom creations and create a beautiful and functional jewelry item. 2064: CHAIN MAKING: ROUND RING CHAINS AND BEYOND

In this workshop, you will learn chain making from raw wire to finished jewelry. The instructor will review the tools to be used, discuss the math behind selecting the right sized jump rings for different chain patterns, and demonstrate how to wind and cut your own jump rings. All levels of students are encouraged to participate. Beginning students will practice making several basic round ring chain patterns using copper jump rings, and advanced students will be encouraged to move beyond the basics into the realm of complex chains, learning how to form, cut, solder, fuse, deform the rings and to make “units” which are linked together to make creative chain jewelry. The instructor will demonstrate several intermediate techniques including fusing, soldering, balling, shaping and texturing.
*$15 fee, payable to the instructor, covers printed material, copper wire and rings for practice.
*It is recommended that you bring an Optivisor. Basic tools will be available for use during the class, or you may bring your own.
*A wide variety of kits for earrings, bracelets and necklaces, sterling silver and gold-filled wire, as well as an assortment of clasps and tools will be available for purchase from the instructor.

2065: CUTTLEBONE CASTING WORKSHOP

This workshop will introduce the basic techniques for cuttlebone casting. Cuttlebone is the hard, brittle internal structure found in the cuttlefish. Castings will be made by carving a mold in the cuttlebone and pouring molten metal into the mold. The techniques will be discussed and demonstrated, following which the students will get hands-on experience carving molds and casting their designs using pewter and, optionally, silver.
*Students are encouraged to bring their own scrap silver, either sterling or fine, to the class. Silver is not included in the cost of the workshop, but will be available from the instructor at market price.
*$25 fee, payable to the instructor, covers several cuttlebones, several ounces of pewter and group supplies. All necessary tools will be supplied by the instructor for use in the workshop.

Curious about hot glass? Wondering if lampworking is for you? This half-day introductory class provides you the opportunity to try your hand at lampworking on a table-top propane/oxygen fueled torch. Students will learn basic information about safety, the use of the torch and other lampworking equipment, and an introduction to some basic glass beadmaking techniques. There will be plenty of torch-time--class size is limited to 4, so every student gets use of their own torch!

2067: BEGINNING LAMPWORKING: GLASS BEADMAKING ON THE TORCH-at the artist's studio

This is a comprehensive beginning lampworking course. Students will learn about safety, lampworking and beadmaking equipment, glass properties, beadmaking techniques and annealing. Using table-top oxygen/propane fueled torches and soft glass, students will learn to make wound glass beads of various shapes; how to use shaping, raking and poking tools; surface decoration; pulling stringers; and basic encasing. Class size is limited to four-so every student gets use of their own table-top torch and plenty of individual attention from the instructor! "Introduction to Lampworking" is not required before taking this class.
